Hel Star Gen 3 Strobe FAQs

What is this light used for?

The HEL-STAR 6® Gen III+ is a safety light. This Core Survival Helstar 6 helps you mark your location so your team can find you. Soldiers, police officers, and rescue teams use it to see their teammates and avoid accidents.

What's the difference between the 620 and 640 models?

The main difference is the switch. The 640 model has a simple switch you can slide with your thumb to change modes. The 620 model has a locking clip on the switch that needs a tool to change modes. This lock stops you from accidentally turning on the wrong light.

How does the IR light work with my night vision?

The IR (infrared) light is a special light that you cannot see with your naked eye. It is made to be seen only through night vision goggles (NVGs). The IR mode on the core survival hel star 6 strobe lets you show your location to teammates who also have NVGs without letting other people see you. It is perfect for staying hidden during covert operations.

What do all the different colors and flashes mean?

The light has four functions, which can be different mixes of colors and flashes.

  • Visible Colors: It comes in white, green, blue, or red. You use these so your team can see you without NVGs.
  • Steady-On: The light just stays on, like a small map light.
  • Flashing (Strobe): The light blinks. This is great for getting attention. The white flash is very bright and can be seen from 3 miles away, which is great for air support.
  • Coded Flashes: It can also flash in special patterns, like Morse Code.

What are the benefits for different teams?

  • On the Battlefield: Soldiers use the IR modes to see their team with NVGs and avoid friendly fire. The strong flash also helps air support spot them.
  • For Law Enforcement: Officers use it to mark team members during night operations. This increases safety and helps everyone know where their team is.
  • For Rescue Teams: The very bright white strobe (blinking light) is visible from over 3 miles away. This makes it a perfect rescue signal for helicopters or search teams to find you.

Can I use this in the rain or water?

Yes. This light is built to be very tough. It is waterproof, dustproof, and shock-resistant. It can be used in the open sea and is waterproof down to 130 feet.

Is it hard to use with gloves on?

No. It was designed to be easy to use, even with gloves on. The switches are big and easy to feel, so you can change modes without having to look at the light.

How do I attach it to my helmet?

It attaches easily with Velcro®, which is on the back of the light. This also lets it "peel-away" if it gets snagged on something, which helps prevent injury.

What kind of battery does it use?

It uses one (1) CR123 battery. You can change the battery in the field without needing any special tools. Please note that the battery is not included with the light.
