The stock chain tensioner in your Polaris motor is hydraulic and prone to random failures. Additionally, the OEM tensioner has a weep hole that causes it to lose tension when the motor is turned off. The engine noise you hear when starting your motor, which disappears after a few seconds, is due to the slack in the timing chain while the tensioner is priming.

If the tensioner fails due to low oil pressure at startup, it will cause the timing chain to come off or jump teeth, leading to the piston hitting the valves and resulting in catastrophic engine failure. This situation would require a complete engine rebuild, costing thousands of dollars.
